We have a fantastic permanent opportunity for a Mixed Animal Veterinary Surgeon to start at a friendly practice in Durham on a full or part time basis.
This role would be suitable for a New Grad looking for a supportive practice or an experienced vet looking to become part of this family style team.
As a veterinary surgeon you will be involved primarily in the veterinary care of patients (including farm animals, horses and small companion animals [which will entail a small number of exotic animals and birds]). You will be expected to treat animals both medically and surgically. There will also be an element of clerical work e.g. completion of paperwork for APHA, insurance claims, ensuring all client records including in-patient hospitalisation sheets, and a degree of general housekeeping care of equipment, cleaning of equipment for re-use and notification of defects with equipment etc.
Your duties will be detailed on a rota. This allows set periods for surgical procedures (major and minor), consultations, visits to clients’ properties and ‘floating’ or filling in as required.
Good communication skills, a willingness to learn and the ability to work as part of a team, follow instructions and make decisions are essential.
The practice is computerised, but no experience is necessary and training will be given.
There will be a degree of physical work involved in the treatment of both large and small animal animals.
You will work to a rota with three other vets. The rota and your hours are the responsibility of the partners. The hours are Monday to Friday and two Saturday mornings in four. The practice opens to the public at 08.30. You should be suitably dressed and ready to see clients at this time. Any hospitalised patients for whom you are responsible should be attended to before this time.
You will be off one day each week, however if you are on call that night you will be expected to be at the practice suitably dressed and ready to see clients at 6PM. The exact timing of this free time is the responsibility of the partners. During periods of staff absence or extreme pressure of work it may be necessary to stop these, time will be carried forward to make allowance for this.
An hour-long lunch break will be timetabled on days when you are at work. During periods of extreme pressure of work it may be curtailed but every reasonable effort will be made to provide this break. The partners will decide the timing of this break.
You will work one night per week on first call and one Friday in four on first. You will work one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in four on first and one on second. You will be asked to cover extra nights for sickness or staff leave, but you will have your illness or leave covered by other vets.
The on-call rota means that you are available to provide emergency treatment for animals outside business hours. You will also be responsible for the overnight care of hospital in-patients. On second call you will be available should the first vet on call require assistance.
During on call hours you should be no more than twenty minutes’ drive from the surgery and contactable at all times. A mobile phone is provided for this.
The ideal candidate will be a friendly, team player who wishes to join a practice and build a successful and enjoyable career. This role would appeal to a new grad looking for their first supported role or an experienced vet looking for longevity and to join a real family style team who are continuously supporting one and other and encouraging each other on a day to day basis.
In return, the practice will offer a competitive salary (DOE) plus Accommodation, Car and other great benefits.
