We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-equipped veterinary practice in South Oxfordshire who is seeking a small animal Veterinary Surgeon to join their team on a permanent basis.
Our client is a purely Small Animal practice, with the main branch where they do all of our ops and hospitalisation. Typically they have 5 vets at a time on duty there on weekdays (two operating and three consulting). They also have a branch surgery which runs consultations only (09:00-12:00 and 15:30-18:00).
They pride themselves on covering their own out of hours cases in-house 24/7. Their ethos is to provide a caring service at a price that is appropriate to clients' means and wishes. They are not the sort of practice that tries to sell, sell, sell, the staff are not on commission!
They have 10 vets in all - a mix of full timers and part timers with experience ranging from 4 to 40 years as well as a new graduate. They have 12 full time qualified and student nurses, a practice manager, an office manager, 2 lab/kennel assistants and a team of part-time receptionists. They are a nurse training practice.
Facilities include a new ultrasound machine, a digital x-ray machine, including dental x-raying, plus endoscopy and a good range of in-house lab equipment. They currently use the ezVetPro VPMS.
Our client is looking for a full-time permanent small animal Veterinary Surgeon. They are a friendly and professional team - with the emphasis on team.
Full-time vets work 4 weekdays every week in compensation for working Out of Hours. They have a number of different shift patterns which fall between their consulting hours which are 08:00-20:00 on weekdays & 07:00-16:00 on Saturdays.
The out of hours is on a rota. You will be on a late shift before being on-call & will finish early the following day (16:00). There is a nurse on the premises overnight, so once the evening ward round and phone calls are complete, the vet can go home (unless you prefer to stay on the premises) and would only need to come in if required for an emergency.
The role would also involve a share of the weekend duty rota which is roughly 1:4.
Consulting is split into blocks of no more than 2 hours per session with all consultations by appointment, lasting 15 minutes minimum. These consulting blocks are punctuated by half hour breaks at minimum, and often 1 hour or more to handle inpatients, paperwork, phone calls, visits, etc. They generally have two operating vets on any given weekday, starting soon after 08:00 and continuing until about 15:00. With 10 vets, that gives each vet one ops day per week.
Vets are generally allowed the freedom to use their best judgment on a case-by-case basis rather than being too rigidly prescriptive.
In return, the practice can offer a salary that is negotiable, depending on experience. They offer 5 weeks' paid holiday per year plus an additional allowance earned for long service. A CPD budget is also provided for each vet.
