We have an exciting opportunity for a Head Veterinary Surgeon to join a busy established small animal veterinary hospital based south of Cambridge. The position is full-time and permanent.

The Practice:

This is our client’ flagship hospital supporting the Cambridge area. The state of the art building, completed in 2013, provides an exceptional environment for clients, staff and most importantly the pets.

The practice maintains a strong local focus and is committed to serving the community as well as providing support and referral facilities to the wider area. The hospital provides a full range of services from routine preventative health care, through to advanced surgery and medicine.

The practice provides an excellent working environment, open and spacious with a fantastic team on-site parking and is situated opposite Whittlesford train station.

The Role:

This is a full-time permanent position for a Head Veterinary Surgeon. The role is 45 hours per week. This will include covering 1 in 6 weekends, 1 extra bank holiday a year and EIV (on-call duties). The role includes cover to branch gaps in rotation with other vets.

The role is responsible for leading the experienced veterinary team and delivering clinical care to the hospitals' patients and client care to their owners. It is paramount that this role delivers client satisfaction to an exceptional level of service defined and measured by the practices KPI'S. this includes making all interactions with clients, ensuring you are fully focused on delivering value, exceptional service and bringing warmth to clients.

Typical responsibilities will be:

Delivering a high level of clinical care to standards in conjunction with the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme, including but not limited to holding consultations and diagnosing animals, performing surgery, administering anesthesia, undertaking scans, etc.

Making sure that your work fully supports the Head Vet’s objective of ensuring the hospital runs effectively and efficiently. You will be responsible for managing the vet teams and the wider hospital team, contributing your skills, efforts and personal strengths to help ensure a harmonious team ethos at all times.

The Candidate:

The successful candidate will have experience running a busy 24 hour hospital. Ideally, you will have 9 years plus experience, but the practice will accept 7 years plus UK veterinary experience.

Patient and clinical care must be to a high standard in conjunction with RCVS, including, but not limited to holding consultations and diagnosing animals, performing surgery, administering anesthesia, undertaking scans, prescribing and euthanasia where necessary.

To maintain and delivery of client satisfaction ensuring an exceptional level, all interactions with clients will fully focus on delivering value, service, and warmth to clients.

Other objectives of ensuring the hospital runs effectively and efficiently includes business development, and strong teamwork.

(The role will involve some travel between practices).

Essential skills:

  • Strong small animal medical and surgical experience
  • Managing veterinary surgeons
  • Awareness of the operational aspects of the practice that affect practice profitability
  • Able to lead
  • Having worked in a sole change role
  • Experience of working in a busy practice or hospital

Desirable Skills:

  • Understanding and experience of a head vet position
  • Previous experience of managing a team
