We are working on behalf of our client who is looking for a Permanent Veterinary Surgeon to join its independent mixed Veterinary Practice based near Newbury in Berkshire. This vacancy would suit a Small Animal, Equine or Mixed Vet across both disciplines and the mix is flexible.

The Practice:

This independent practice specialises in 50% Equine and 50% Small Animal work. Situated in a rural location near Newbury, Berkshire, there is easy access to main transport links with London, Reading, Southampton, Oxford, Winchester, and Swindon all being within an hour. The practice prides itself on having a dedicated and highly engaged team who value the importance of a good home/work-life balance. Their facilities include:-

  • Digital X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • Idexx practice lab
  • Lazer
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Endoscopy

The Role:

This is a full-time, permanent position working Monday - Friday 08.30 - 18.00 with each Vet having one half day off, once a week from 13.00. There is an on-call rota of 1 in 4 but the practice does not do any routine surgeries on Saturdays and Sundays. In return, our client is offering a competitive salary and benefits package which includes:-

  • Competitive salary (DOE)
  • 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays
  • 10% turnover bonus for out of hours work
  • RCVS, VDS, BSAVA, and BUPA paid
  • 5 days CPD paid and certificate study supported
  • A commercial vehicle for equine work
  • Mobile phone

The Candidate:

This vacancy could be filled by one of three types of candidate:-

Small Animal Vet: Consideration would be given to candidates with any level of experience if they have the right attitude for this role. The small animal team provides care for the local Dogs Trust kennels so an interest in the fascinations of shelter medicine would be useful. The caseload is hugely varied and is supported by a nursing team of three, including one RVN and two SVNs.

Equine Vet: Our client will also consider an experienced equine vet. The practice looks after Sports Horses (mainly Eventers and Dressage Horses), Show Horses, Show Jumping Ponies, and Leisure Horses and Ponies. They provide a very high level of service and use itinerant Specialists and Surgeons to back them up in their small, well-equipped surgery with stocks and stabling facilities. They also provide a very high level of dental care with each vet being equipped with a modern dental machine.

Mixed Vet: Additionally, they will consider a candidate who would be happy to do a mix of Small Animal and Equine work. The level of the mix would depend on the candidate's particular interest and the role might evolve into a predominance of one or other side of the practice.

There is very occasional sole charge because of holidays/CPD etc. so you should be comfortable with this responsibility.
