We are working with a leading veterinary research practice in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire that is looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join them as their Head of Medical Oncology. This exciting opportunity is a permanent full-time position which would be suitable for a vet that holds or be eligible to sit the ACVIM/ ECVIM- Oncology (or equivalent) diploma and have had significant exposure to Oncology in a referral setting.
The Practice is a leading veterinary and scientific research charity dedicated to the health and welfare of animals. The Small Animal Referral Centre is a specialist-led multi-disciplinary referral centre, set in the beautiful grounds of 120-acre stately home just outside historic Newmarket (the centre of British Horse Racing). This is also the home of the equine referral clinic, diagnostic laboratory services, and scientific laboratories which undertake pioneering research into diseases and injuries of horses, dogs, and cats.
You would be joining a large team of specialists offering dermatology, internal medicine, neurology/neurosurgery, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, oncology, ophthalmology, and supported by anatomic and clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia. The diagnostic imaging equipment includes a GE Signa 1.5T Echospeed MRI machine, a GE Brivo 385 16 slice CT
scanner and two Siemens c-arm image intensifiers.
The 45-strong nursing team includes registered veterinary nurses, animal nursing assistants and ward assistants. The rehabilitation team includes a qualified veterinary physiotherapist and a hydrotherapy team, with an underwater treadmill and swimming pool on site. About the area:
Newmarket is a market town in the English county of Suffolk, approximately 65 miles (105 kilometres) north of London. It is generally considered the birthplace and global centre of thoroughbred horse racing and a potential World Heritage Site. Newmarket is also only a stone’s throw away from the historic university town of Cambridge.
As the Head of Service, you are responsible for the management of the Oncology department including providing clinical leadership and ensuring effective management and support for senior clinical staff, as well as managing your own Oncology caseload.
If you would rather apply for a position as an Oncologist, but not as Head of Service, your candidacy will also be welcomed.
The number of hours and days you work is negotiable, however, a typical role would be 35 hours per week over 4 or 5 days. The post will include an out-of-hours emergency service provision, shared amongst the team.
The Ideal Candidate:
The successful applicant will hold, or be eligible to sit the ACVIM/ ECVIM- Oncology (or equivalent) diploma and have had significant exposure to Oncology in a referral setting. You will have an excellent team of support staff who will give you the opportunity to concentrate on your clinical caseload and to work in a pleasant and supportive atmosphere.
Remuneration will be very competitive and will be commensurate with experience. Between £80,000 -£150,000 p/a dependent on experience and potential work pattern.
