We are currently recruiting on behalf of a large, independent veterinary group in Derby who is looking for an experienced, Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join their team.

This is a full-time permanent role where client-facing skills are integral as this is a 1st opinion Vet position, so you will really enjoy direct contact with the animal’s people. They have a regular returning customer base so naturally having the skills to build long term relationships is an asset.

The Practice:

Our client is one of the largest providers of veterinary care locally and their principal site is in Derby, where they provide first opinion treatments plus referral services for clients and other practices. They have a dedicated night team. They have 12 local practices that provide quality care, with well-equipped on-site facilities and lots of returning customers who want that friendly team feels. This role will support the Veterinary Centre with occasional cover at local practices. Their 1st Opinion Vet team is another example of the culture of being supportive, passionate, caring, and professional. Their Vet team is supported by a team of practice nurses. Although they have an organised plan and structure for the daily consults, events happen and things change. This is when this team proactively adjust and adapt their workloads to ensure most importantly that emergency cases receive immediate care while their existing customers for that day aren’t overly inconvenienced by any changes. You will need to be confident in making decisions, and happy to mix with different teams and build relationships quickly.

The Role and Candidate:

You will enjoy managing cases to a high clinical standard. You will have case continuity from consulting with the client to managing the pet on the wards, carrying out diagnostics, and treatment through to discharge and ongoing care. This role will involve the usual routine procedures for pet care and maintenance but there will also be frequent situations where the route to the prognosis could be an interesting journey. You will expand your knowledge and skills by working closely with other members of the first opinion and referral teams.

This is a full-time permanent role and where you be working an average of 43 per week, with approx 1:6 weekends With no out of hour requirements this role supports good work/life balance.

Skills and Experience:

Client facing skills are integral for this 1st Opinion Vet position and they have a regular returning customer base so naturally having the skills to build long term relationships is an asset. Required skills and experience would be:

  1. Experience in small animal work ( 2 years plus, must be in the UK)
  2. Great client communication skills
  3. Ability to make decisions, prioritise and delegate
  4. Commitment to continuous development

Would be good to have….

  1. Certificate in medicine, surgery, or imaging or a desire to enroll

The Package:

In return, our client offers a competitive salary and benefits which will be discussed in the interview.
