Permanent Lead Veterinary Surgeon - Melrose, Scotland

Type: Farm Animal

Location: Melrose, Scotland

Practice: Part of a group

Facilities: This is a mixed practice with approximately 70% small animals, 30% farm animals, and a stand-alone regenerative medicine and rehabilitation unit.

Team: They are fortunate to have a wonderful team and any new associate joining the team would be warmly welcomed. The team of 10 vets is enthusiastic, dedicated, and likes to enjoy social events together when they can. Their team is supported by a large RVN, PCA, and front-of-house team. As Veterinary professionals, they enjoy their working days together and are very supportive of each other. They have team members with lots of different interests and fully support ongoing study. They have vets currently studying towards certificates in Internal Medicine, a DBR holder, and nurses also studying for further qualifications too.

Role: They are looking for a vet with a real enthusiasm for farm work who is looking to take on the challenge of leading a large animal team.

  • The role would include line-managing the 5 large animal vets and supporting the Clinical Director to ensure the farm side of the business continues to thrive.

  • They have a loyal client base of mainly spring-calving beef and sheep clients with one dairy (fortnightly routine).

  • Their clients are a mixture of pedigree and commercial enterprises, are progressive in their thinking, and are engaged with the practice.

  • They have a flock club for their sheep clients and a beef club which we are looking to get back on track after COVID and maternity disruptions.

Hours: Full-time rota; 4 days per week (36hrs) with 1 in 5 OOHs. They welcome discussions regarding the ideal rota for you and they do have flexibility with rota/shifts/OOHs.

OOHs: Their out-of-hours work is well supported with a dedicated nurse on call with the vet to assist where required. Their nurses expect to be called in! They have no routine weekend consulting and they give you Friday off after your weekend on call.

  • The right candidate for the role will be an enthusiastic, friendly farm-only or mixed veterinary surgeon with good communication skills. This is a rare opportunity for a permanent vet to join a super friendly, family feel practice where they pride themselves on providing a good work: life balance along with lots of on-the-job support for their colleagues.

  • They have an established management team including a Clinical Director with a DBR to support the right candidate to flourish in their role. Their team expects an open and honest management style and they encourage regular feedback from their associates to get the very best working environment for everyone.

Salary: Competitive salary of up to £60,000 pro rata dependent on experience
