Permanent Veterinary Surgeon - Southampton

We are working with a strong independent group that is looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join their practice in Southampton on a full-time permanent basis. They are a strong, independent, well-equipped small animal hospital with two branch surgeries, where you will have all the clinical freedom and support to succeed in your clinical aspirations, whilst having the time off to enjoy living in a National Park area and a coastal location. The emphasis in their practice life is teamwork, and their team is everything.

The Practice:

They have an experienced team of 11 SA vet FTEs with multiple certificate holders, and 21 VNs ensuring excellent VN support to the vets. They also provide an Ophthalmology referral service to the South of England and have visiting Orthopaedic and Exotics consultants. In addition to the beautiful purpose-built hospital, they have two smaller branch surgeries nearby which are manned by other members of the team.

The role is based at the hospital and would suit someone with the experience to undertake more advanced surgical or diagnostic procedures and the career drive for potential future development of their career. However, if you just want to be part of a skilled and experienced team, in a busy dynamic practice that provides plenty of support that is fine too!

The Role and Candidate:

The full-time week is for 40 hours per week and will be split between consulting and surgery sessions, however, they are very flexible and can work the week to your preference. i.e., if you would like more surgical sessions, that is something that can be put in place for you!

They offer excellent new graduate support, and a mentor will be allocated to you. You would be slowly inducted onto the OOH rota, with full support and backup from one of their ophthalmology clinical directors, so you will be in very good hands!

The hospital does run its own OOH, but the number of duties is small as they are split between so many team members and there is plenty of time off in lieu following a shift. The OOHs rotas are flexible in their patterns as they believe in the importance of a healthy work-life balance and are always looking at ways of improving things further. Their RVNs are on-site 24/7 for patient care and to answer the phones, and there are sleeping facilities at the hospital for your on-call shift. The nights are a ‘sleeping role’ and you would only be called down to see emergencies, which averages 1 – 2 patients per shift.

The Package:

  • In return, our client is offering a salary that is commensurate with experience - The new grad starting salary is from £34,720 and is up to £76,000 for an experienced surgeon.
  • Plus benefits that include: 6.6 weeks annual leave plus a further holiday buying scheme, RCVS, VDS, and BSAVA fees are all paid for and there is also the possibility for accommodation above the branches should you need it.
  • CPD is actively encouraged and funded with Certificate study / Advanced Practitioner status also being very well supported and holders financially recognised.
  • When undertaking a certificate, the time allowed is 10 days per year for 3 years, and the financial support package is negotiated.
