Permanent Referral Veterinary Nurse x 2 - Queensland

Location: Townsville, Queensland

Practice: This Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a controlled entity of a local University, and while it works closely with the Uni, it has its own Board of Directors and operates independently. It is located on campus, across the road from the Veterinary Sciences Faculty. It is established to provide clinical training to 5th-year veterinary students. Within the same building, they have five disciplines - General Practice, Emergency & Critical Care and Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia (Referral Services). They employ approx. 85-90 employees and locum vets across these disciplines. 

Role: This position provides excellence in advanced veterinary nursing across the referral disciplines.

The Veterinary Nurse (Referral) uses a team approach to deliver optimal patient care, clinical support to Veterinary Clinicians, and effective communication between all services within the Hospital. This includes the provision of complex treatment plans to patients, assisting with referral surgical and medical procedures, and assisting with advanced diagnostic procedures.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Multidisciplinary Support - The primary responsibility of this role is to be proactive in understanding the needs of the disciplines and provide assistance to them when required. 
  • Patients - Provide first-class nursing care to all patients
  • Consultations - Assist the veterinarian with consultations and ensure that paperwork is completed promptly
  • Emergency & Critical Care - Perform CPR, triage patients, communicate findings, and assist with the stabilisation and care of patients
  • Anaesthesia - Assist the Anesthetist with the assessments and management of patients.
  • Surgical and Medical Procedures - Assist the teams with all nursing aspects required
  • Diagnostics - Perform, process, and assist veterinarians to safely obtain images and samples from patients
  • Infection Control & Cleanings - Follow all infection control policies and procedures, including hospital cleaning, sterilisation, patient-to-patient handling, and disposal of waste.
  • Administration and Communications - Assist in the referral of patients between services within the hospital.
  • Mentorship - Assess, support, and guide undergraduate veterinarians 

Hours: Day worker working 38 hours p.w. worked across 4X 9.5 hour shifts, Monday-Friday within the span of hours 07:30-19:00

Qualifications, Licenses, and Memberships:

Essential

  • Recognised veterinary nursing qualification such as Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor in Veterinary Technology.
  • RECOVER CPR training, or willingness to obtain.
  • Queensland radiation licence.

Desirable

  • Membership with VNCA or similar industry body.
  • Veterinary Nursing Diploma, VTS qualification, or other recognised advanced qualifications 

Skills and Experience

  • At least two years of previous veterinary nursing experience
  • Advanced knowledge of small referral procedures, and terminology
  • Experience in low-stress animal handling techniques
  • Sound knowledge of a wide range of common medications including dispensing and administration
  • Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional client care using advanced medical knowledge
  • Well-developed organisational skills, with the ability to multitask efficiently
  • Sound computer and administrative skills
  • Familiarity with RxWorks or equivalent record management software

Salary: Starting at $38.40 per hour and upwards depending on experience.
